Weekend Trip: Hamburg

Ok, so this post is a little late...but I have some exams coming up so I've been spending most of my time studying! I was able to do a quick trip to Hamburg from February 27 to March 1 before things got too busy. I took a train from Copenhagen Central Station on Friday morning, and got into Hamburg around 3pm. I chose Hamburg because a friend of mine went at the beginning of the semester; she said it was perfect for a short, weekend trip.

A weekend was just the right amount of time; there was enough things to do where I wasn't bored, but I also didn't feel too rushed. If you're considering visiting Hamburg, I think one weekend is enough time to see most of the sights. I'll add my list of stops and corresponding photos for each day I was there:

Friday, 2/27:

  • Hamburg Central station

  • Laeiszhalle - concert hall

  • Hanseatisches Oberlandesgericht - court

  • Hamburg Bunker

  • Schilleroper

  • St. Johannis - Kulturkirche Altona (I definitely recommend the light show!)

*Suggestion: The St. Pauli area can feel a little bit eerie at night, so consider taking a taxi or public transportation instead of walking, especially if traveling solo like me!

Saturday, 2/28:

  • St. Nikolai Memorial

  • Miniatur Wunderland - miniature museum (highly recommend)

  • Rickmer Rickmers ship

  • Fernsehturm & Hamburg Exhibition Hall

  • Planten un Blomen (not the best time of year for it, though)

  • Hamburg Congress Center

  • Hamburg State Opera

  • Außenalster lake

  • Hamburg Kunsthalle - art museum

Sunday, 3/1:

  • Hamburg Rathaus - city hall (highly recommend)

  • Hauptkirche St. Petri - St. Peter's Church

  • Hauptkirche St. Jacobi - St. Jacob's Church

  • Lange Reihe area

  • Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe - art and industry museum

*Bonus tip: Go out and explore early on Sunday mornings for little/no crowds and to hear the church bells!

Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to Hamburg (and had some delicious food). I tried a schnitzel and mac n' cheese bowl, currywurst, and a pastry called Franzbrötchen. Between the two art museums I visited, I personally enjoyed the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe a bit more, since there was a wider variety of art/items on display. My top 3 favorites from that weekend were Minitatur Wunderland, the light show at St. Johannis Kulturkirche, and the Hamburg Rathaus!
